How to Delete a Family Tree on Ancestry?

Sometimes, you need to delete family trees on Ancestry.com if you no longer require them. Either you are deleting your tree or someone shared the tree with you, responsible deletion follows proper procedures in ensuring the deletion process goes smoothly. Here’s how to permanently delete or remove a family tree on Ancestry.

Deleting a Tree you Created

If you’ve built a family tree on Ancestry that you would now like to delete, here’s how to do that easily in 3 steps:

  1. On the top menu click the TREES tab. Choose which tree you wish to delete.
  2. To the left of Tree Name, click. Now navigate to Tree Settings.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click Delete your tree.
  4. Enter your account password to confirm, then click DELETE.

Note: Deleting your family tree is permanent and irreversible. Once removed, all people, events, and items attached will be deleted from your account, though previously shared records may still exist on the site if shared by others.

Removing a Shared Family Tree from your Account

If someone has shared a tree with you and you’d like to remove it from your list without deleting it from Ancestry:

  1. Click the TREES tab, then Create & Manage Trees.
  2.  Under TREES SHARED WITH ME, locate the tree you wish to remove.
  3. Click Remove from the list next to the tree.
  4. Confirm by selecting OK.

Note: This operation simply removes the tree from your account; but it does not remove it from Ancestry. The original owner still has all the rights.

Bottom Lines

A very simple process to delete or remove family trees from Ancestry, yet done with caution since deleting that tree is irreversible. Remember a deleted tree is dead forever. Use caution and really make sure you want to get rid of this when removing it and duplicate any important data. Update your family history today. Take control of your Ancestry trees for an easier genealogy experience.
